  • Rhosymedre
  • Anderson’s Irish Suite (Irish Washerwoman, Rakes of Mallow, Girl I Left Behind Me)
  • Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry
  • Holst’s 2nd Suite in F
  • The British Invasion
  • Crown Imperial

Read and rehearse the following music for January 24:

  • With Quiet Courage
  • America the Beautiful
  • Crown Imperial
  • Appalachian Spring (esp. measures 17-87, we did not play this section last week)
  • Bernstein’s In Nomine Patris/Almighty Father
  • The Girl I Left Behind Me
  • His Honor
  • Around the World in 80 Days

At our third rehearsal this past week, we read

  • Anderson’s Irish Washerwoman
  • Anderson’s Rakes of Mallow
  • Granger’s Irish Tune
  • Vaughan Williams’ Rhosymedre
  • the Gershwin medley
  • and the second half of Appalachian Spring.

Here’s some advice on how to prepare the technically challenging sections of music.

Start slow and practice with a metronome.
I generally start about at half tempo so I can concentrate on playing with my best tone quality without having to worry about playing ‘fast’ notes (if the tempo is 120 bpm, start at 60 bpm). I choose a short passage of a challenging phrase and practice at the same tempo until I’m satisfied with my progress (I play the passage 4 times in a row without errors – if I make a mistake, I start over again until I’ve played it 4 times without errors). Increase tempo by 4 bpm (60, 64, 68, 72, 76, etc, until you reach 120). You may not make the goal tempo the first day you practice, if not, the next day, start at the beginning of this technique and work to your goal.

Practice slowly even after you can play a passage at tempo. Think about this; You’re riding in a car at 60 mph and you pass a child playing in her yard at home. At that fast tempo, you probably only pick up a few details, such as the girl had long hair and wore a yellow dress. If you passed her at 50 mph, you would have more time to notice that she not only had long hair, but wore a yellow ribbon in her hair and the yellow dress had white vertical stripes. You also noticed that she had a doll that she was carrying. If you passed her at 40 mph, you notice that she was picking flowers from the yard and weaving them in the doll’s hair. You also have time to see that her shoes were black and shiny and that she wore a white belt around her waist. If you passed her at 30 mph, you have time to notice other dolls on the ground around her, which you now can count because you have more time to observe various aspects of the scene. The moral to this story is that you can focus more on tone quality, breath support, phrasing, and other musical aspects if you’re playing the notes and rhythms slowly. A few practice sessions with slow practice can get you to performance tempo with the musical aspects executed very well.
