The history of high schools in Worcester involved combining or separating students studying the English vs. the Classical curriculum based upon which group had more students. Therefore, it was no surprise that the new Irving Street high school, at first, became English High School. There were many more students studying the English curriculum than the Classical curriculum. Classical high school students remained in the 1871 facility (see back cover).
It was not until 1914 that the Irving Street facility became our Classical High School. Remaining English high school students were sent to several schools, most to the 1871 facility which became Commerce High School.
